Weaning off HRT is really simple, but it does take a little time. You do not want to go cold turkey. Synthetic
Estrogens are very strong and can produce withdrawal symptoms if stopped abruptly. By following these guidelines you should
have a comfortable transition from HRT to natural hormone replacement.
Obtain a natural progesterone cream with 450-500 mg of USP progesterone and in an air tight container, preferably
containing plant phyto-estrogens. I recommend Pro-G Yam.
If you are taking a combination HRT containing estrogen and progestin (such and Prempro) visit
with your doctor regarding your desire to use a natural alternative and ask him/her to prescribe an estrogen only and at 1/2
of the dose you are taking now.
If you are taking separate estrogen and progestin (such as Premarin and Provera)...you can stop taking
the Provera when you start using Pro-G Yam, progesterone cream...and cut your estrogen pill or patch in half and follow the
remaining weaning schedule.
If you are taking estrogen only, such as Premarin, cut your current pill or patch in half when
you start using Pro-G Yam progesterone cream and follow the remaining weaning schedule.
Use Pro-G Yam progesterone cream daily for 25 consecutive days each month.
After you have been on the Pro-G Yam with the lower dose of estrogen for 2-3 weeks start skipping every 4th
day of estrogen for 2-3 weeks
Then skip every 3 day of estrogen for 2-3 weeks
Then skip every other day of estrogen for 2-3 weeks
Then stop the estrogen completely
Remember also that this process can be slowed down (or speed up) depending on any withdrawal symptoms you
may experience (hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings)
